The Other Side of Menopause

by Holly on May 12, 2010

When you had your first hot flash, did you immediately run to Google and do a search for menopause symptoms? If so, you’re not alone.

There is plenty of advice on how to physically prepare for menopause. You’ve probably heard it all. Improve your diet. Exercise more. Don’t smoke. In other words, we need to live the healthy lifestyles we should have been living all along. OK, good. We can do that.

But how do we prepare ourselves mentally?

We all know menopause is going to happen. When it does, though, most of us are caught off-guard. We feel that we’re too young. We’re not ready to face the challenges or the changes in our bodies. Panic starts to set in. Was that a hot flash? How did I gain five pounds overnight? And why am I so damn crabby?

Learn all you can before symptoms take over. Read, talk to other women, and ask your mom or aunts about their experiences. Do your homework. Finally, find a doctor who will listen, understand, and work with you towards a solution.
